Kristi's Christmas
All Year Round
WEST SPRINGFIELD ROTARY FOUNDATION
In 1987, Kristi, 19 yrs old, was suddenly taken from her family and friends in a tragic beltway auto accident. She left many fond memories for all of those who knew her and gave the gift of life to several who did not know her by being an organ donor.
Because Kristi had a special place in her heart for those children less fortunate than herself, following her death a fund was established in her memory to help some of the neediest children in Fairfax County. Every year many children have been helped through generous donations by caring individuals who want to see that the children right here in Fairfax County are not overlooked. Working with school Principals, Counselors, Social Workers, and the County, children are identified who are in greatest of need and who may "fall through the cracks" of other county, state, and federal programs. These needs are very great and extensive. Now, Year Round, if "Kristi's Christmas" knows of a need, it tries to help. New and used Clothing is delivered throughout the school year as well as school supplies, eye glasses, stuffed animals, etc. Of special need, when the cold weather is upon us, are warm jackets, mittens, boots and hats, so if you have friends with children who have outgrown these items and if the clothing is still in top condition, it can bring warmth to another child.
In December, 40+ children are identified for a special day of shopping and a party with Santa Claus. These children are teamed up with students from West Springfield High School who have given their time to be a "buddy" to a child for a day giving 150% of their love and attention. Following a great breakfast brought in to a local school(including their favorite, pizza), they purchase BASIC needed clothing at a local KMart (Usually $100 is allowed each child). Then the children have a party complete with a visit from Santa who gives them practical gifts (backpack, sleeping bag, school supplies, toothpaste etc., lapdesk, books, large stuffed animal) AND lots of hugs and words of encouragement. Most often, being a buddy to a needy child is as meaningful to the high school students as the child they are helping.
Additionally, toys and other gift items are collected in various business/organizations for the project. Those along with items purchased from the available funds are delivered to principals who have indentified other children in need to be recipients. 100% of all contributions go toward this project and it stays in Fairfax County. No overhead. To feel good, read the Report. Thanks for your interest. |
